Closet Case
Reconfiguring a niche for towels and toiletries
The bathroom closet is a haven for disarray. In a fast-paced household, it can quickly become the dumping ground for towels and toiletries. We asked Linda Rothschild, a professional organizer based in New York City, to share her tried-and true methods for taming this problem terrain. Here’s what she said:
- Lay plastic liners on wire shelving so small items won’t fall through. (Liners also prevent indentations from forming on towels.)
- Arrange linens by size and function and stack in neat piles.
- Place surplus bath items – bags of cotton balls, rolls of toilet paper, bars of soap – in labeled, clear plastic containers.
- Stash laundry in a hamper. Those with tilt-out bins are ideal for tight spaces. Install multiple hooks strong enough to support heavy bathrobes and towels on the inside of the door.
- Store aromatic candles or scented soap to keep closet contents smelling fresh.
